British born, Hilary Bockham started her career as a fashion designer in 1980 at the age of 26. She fell in love with designing and creating garments using knitting machines. Her inspiration came from the idea that with these flat manual-use knitting machines she could  develop techniques to produce exquisite, three-dimensional high fashion garments.
Her first pieces were simple black dresses which received instant praise. She soon began to receive orders from high-end fashion retailers in The Kings Road, London and the well-known department store, Harvey Nichols. Her popularity and success quickly sky-rocketed and soon she started to sell all around the world.
She was featured in numerous editions of Vogue magazine along with ELLE, Marie Claire, The Clothes Show magazine, Sky and many more. Her clothes were photographed by some of the top fashion photographers of the time, such as Herb Ritz and Carrie Branovan. They were also extremely popular with pop stars, such as Bananarama, and models like Jerry Hall, Marie Helvin and Tatiana. Her clothes went on to be featured in various music videos, on TV shows and adverts. In 1988 she was named by ELLE magazine as one of the 8 names of the year. She also received high praise from fellow fashion designer, Vivienne Westwood who described her as ‘a very clever woman’.
Now based in Italy she works on a much smaller scale but still enjoys experimenting with different yarns to create unique effects. Her spectacular handmade pieces still sell all around the world.
